How to Fix: "WinRM Service is Not Running"

February 18, 20264 views

Windows Remote Management (WinRM) is the backbone of remote administration. When it fails, you lose the ability to manage your server remotely. Follow these steps in order to restore service.

Method 1: The Quick Fix (Command Prompt)

This is the automated way to configure the service, set up listeners, and open the necessary firewall ports.

  1. Click Start, type cmd, right-click it, and select Run as Administrator.

  2. Type the following command and press Enter:

    winrm quickconfig
  3. You will be asked to make changes (Type y for Yes to both):

    • Set WinRM service to delayed auto-start.

    • Create a WinRM listener to accept requests on any IP.

Method 2: Manual Service Reset (If Method 1 Fails)

If quickconfig returns an error, the service might be stuck or disabled in the system settings.

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.

  2. Locate Windows Remote Management (WS-Management) in the list.

  3. Right-click it and select Properties.

  4. Set the Startup type to Automatic (Delayed Start).

  5. If the service is stopped, click Start.

  6. Click Apply and OK.
